adam is abusive. as such, ben and belle do not have the best relationship. neither of the two were aware that adam was abusive to the other until belle divorces adam after d3. however, ben is both in denial and aware that adam was abusive to him. he in part thinks that adam was only "tough" on him to make him a better king, but he also hides what adam has said and done to him.

the world of descendants is one big continent with a bunch of islands floating around. the continent spans long and wide.

auradon is called the united kingdoms of auradon. for shorthand, it's just called auradon.

most of the continent was a part of the united kingdoms of auradon, but after the war and the infamous decision of creating the isle, some kingdoms decided they would split but would still be allies.

the war ,

"soon to be finished."

there were villains still alive after their defeats against the heroes of the stories who decided to band and work together in order to get rid of all the heroes once and for all. since they knew they would need more manpower, the brought back villains who died and their henchmen.

war soon broke out between the heroes and the villains. adam was one of the many war heroes, but as he was pivotal for a plan that dealt a huge blow to the villains, he got voted as the high king of auradon. he also came up with the idea of putting the villains on the isle.

related note, zeus decided to put hades in a time-out for fifty years on the isle because hades "allowed" people to take back the souls that were killed. hades had no idea that the villains were going to do that and had been trying to figure out how they managed it. as such, hades is wrongfully imprisoned on the isle.

citizens of auradon are banned from using magic within its borders. those who are allied can use magic within their own borders but need a special disposition to use magic within the borders of auradon. those who want nothing to do with auradon don't usually traverse there and thus don't worry about it.

pre-d1. ben has two beast incidents prior to the movies, which feeds into his fear that he will turn into his father.

the first is when he was fourteen. he had always been a gifted athlete, fast and strong, and thus he made the tourney team easily in his freshman year. at this time, he hadn't yet decided to hide his strength completely, allowing some of his inhuman abilities to come out. his temper, however, was calm... except when faced with a team who smirks when a friend's leg breaks and a taunt, after the game is done and the audience had left, that revealed the break was on purpose. the beast gets loose, and the other team drastically loses in the ensuring fight as ben rips them apart alone. ben vows never again.

the second is when he's fifteen in a meeting with people who will not listen. he feels as if he does not have control, feels like he's letting his father down and that he's not being a good enough king, so he stands on a chair and screams. upon the reaction of the people, he vows never again. (he does wonder, if a king cannot act in this way, then why does his father?). still, he changes his strategy and instead of emulating his father, he decides to emulate his mother--reading all of the grievances and taking measures to solve each one.

d1. ben and audrey were never romantically in love with each other, but they did date each other to get the pressure off. ben apologised to audrey about the break-up of did i mention after ben and mal's first date, and they managed to joke together about ben's terrible singing and how audrey should have known it wasn't naturally him because ben doesn't sing.

however, tension still rises between the two because ben decides to give mal a second chance and date her even though he was spelled by her, and audrey tries to talk him out of it.

d2. ben is not upset about mal using her magic. rather, he is upset about how she lied to him and that she does feel the need to drastically change to "fit in". he loves her for her, and the fact that she doesn't seem to see that worries him. he was disappointed when he realised mal lied to him, but he lost his temper because mal tried to spell him. specifically, to spell him so that he would forget about finding her spell book. he was understanding when mal put him under the love potion, but trying to spell him again, especially to alter him? that had been a blow he hadn't expected, especially after being together for six months, so he lost his temper. he realises as soon as she ran that he should not have said what he did, and he thinks he should have been more understanding of mal's background and how her trauma caused her to react by hiding.

when the group is on the isle, ben does not wander off and look at the isle in fascination as if he's amazed at how different the isle is. rather, he's kind of horrified at the conditions of the isle (although, he is amazed that people have managed so well). because he doesn't wander off, ben is around to see the two children who attempt to steal evie's wallet, and ben gives them some cash. both ben and evie share a look as they both separately realise how much help the isle and the children need.

true love's kiss doesn't work between ben and mal, but uma drops the spell anyway because she found that fascinating and wanted to see their reactions. ben and mal break up but not because of how true love's kiss fails. rather, they both realise that they need time (mal to figure out who she is, ben to regain trust in mal). however, they still remain friends.

post-d2. ben and uma band together for her to have control of the solution to make the isle a better place. however, ben makes the decision to move all of the major villains to a separate island as the isle has become its own society and is no longer a prison. the villains are on another island (that is more humane) that has a barrier of its own around it. at this time, ben tried to get the people of auradon to understand that the people on the isle have served their time and thus the isle's dome should be taken down, but 70% of auradon signed a petition for the isle to keep the barrier, so ben is unable to take the barrier down at this moment. however, he is bringing in children over to auradon and is helping to fix the isle so that it is a better place to live.

there are several people on the council and in the government attempting to stop ben from implementing his ideas about the isle if he delegates certain things, so only he and he alone has been working on helping the isle within the auradonian government. he has ideas as to who these people are, but rather than focus on catching them, he would rather focus on helping the isle since he neglected it for six months. however, there was an attempted assassination attempt on ben a month prior to the events of d3. since then, ben has started to investigate who is coming after him.

pre-d3. ben was told that hades is on the isle, and he travels to mount olympus to ask zeus about it. however, zeus forces a minor god to meet with ben, who informs him that ben is not allowed to release hades since he is twenty years into a fifty year time-out and has no jurisdiction over gods.

ben knows this isn't right since hades is the god of the underworld and hades is importance for the balance. thus, he decides to meet with hades in his underground lair (an idea highly rejected by everyone that ben does anyway). since ben is willing to work with hades to get him out, hades decides to wait to see what ben would do.

d3. as ben and mal are not together, there is no proposal scene for audrey to "turn evil". instead, maleficent's sceptre has been calling out to audrey for her to accept its power. the power of the sceptre got stronger over the years, which is why audrey eventually succumbs. she steals both the sceptre and the crown and decides that she does want to be queen.

after the theft of the crown and the sceptre, adam decides to blame the villains' kids for the theft and suggests they close down the barrier for the isle for good. ben is completely enraged; although, it doesn't show as ben calmly but firmly says that his word is law and that he will never permanently shut down the barrier. if adam tried to overstep ben to do so, ben will stay on the isle and die there along with them.

the barrier does not come down at the end of the events of d3 since the petition is still at the back of ben's mind. however, ben pretends to be completely surprised when hades escapes from his guards after hades helps to heal audrey.post-d3. as per holmesdepot's canon, ben is supportive of belle divorcing adam and leaving auradon to go live on the isle. ben also finds himself moving out of his father's castle. he decides to move to a smaller property that now doubles as his new office after he gradutes from auradon prep. ben decides to not go to college and instead focuses full-time as high king.

a year later (and a few more assassination attempts and propaganda against him later), ben gathers enough evidence to oust some of the enemies in his court. some (the ones who wanted him dead) were from another country. some (those who made propaganda against him) were old friends of his father who thought he was ruining his father's life's work.
